Empowering The Future Through Technology
UBEC Model Smart School, Gusau, represents a beacon of hope and excellence in basic education in Zamfara State. Our mandate is to provide high-quality, inclusive, and technologically advanced learning environments following a comprehensive 9-year Universal Basic Education cycle.
Our Mission
To transform basic education through technology, innovation, and inclusive access by providing interactive learning that develops critical STEM and digital skills.
Our Vision
To be a leading center of excellence in basic education that produces skilled, morally grounded, and globally competitive citizens ready for the digital economy.
Origins & Rationale
The Smart Schools programme emerged as a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. School closures lasting nearly a year exposed the heavy dependence of Nigerian basic education on face-to-face teaching. With limited remote-learning options available at the time, learning was severely disrupted for millions of children.
UBEC initiated the construction of 37 Model Smart Schools (one per state and the FCT) to build resilience against future disruptions and to introduce 21st-century teaching and learning methods. The programme also addresses longstanding challenges such as low digital literacy among teachers, weak foundational learning outcomes, and high numbers of out-of-school children, particularly in Zamfara State.
Zamfara State Education Context
Zamfara continues to face challenges of high out-of-school numbers (mapped at 453,602 in 2024-2025) and gender disparity in enrolment. The UBE Model Smart School serves as a high-quality demonstration centre that can help improve learning outcomes and serve as a model for other schools in the state, boasting a 95% Common Entrance success rate.
